This “sleep” mode an animal enters, bears no resemblance to the sleep of a person, which can be disturbed with loud noises or even a touch…
The main reason for hibernation is food scarcity. Animals that hibernate prepare themselves by eating greedily a lot of food during the summer days! This way, they store a lot of energy in their fat, that they’ ll use during their hibernation to survive. This ensures the animal will wake up as strong as it was in the autumn before its hibernation!
The preparation includes not only a great meal beforehand, ie to feed themselves well, but also to prepare their nests for hibernation. The animals must find a great place to hide, because when in hibernation, they are vulnerable to predators. Sometimes they collect food right next to where they sleep, they wake up for a while, eat and go straight back to sleep!
In other words, animals hibernate simply because they can’t survive the winter season! When an animal goes into hibernation, its body temperature drops, so it needs to be protected with a lot of energy stored in its fat and a warm nest! Moreover, when an animal falls into hibernation, its breathing and heartbeats slow down so much that one would think the animal is dead! Animals that go into hibernation are bears, snakes, snails, lizards, beavers, frogs and many more! All in all, hibernartion is essentially a slowdown of all body functions and a way to save energy.
