Originally native to China, Shar Pei is one of the most recognised and popular breeds of domestic dogs. Their trademark is their famous wrinkles. They have short, rough and dense in a large variety of colors, like black, tan and cream. Shar Peis stand approximately 50 centimeters tall and weigh 18 to 24 kilos. They have a life span of 8 to 10 years. Full of confidence and solemnity Shar Pei is a dog with many peculiarities. It is a great dog for pet, because, though not particularly demonstrative, Shar Pei is very protective of his family members. A Shar Pei dog is distrustful of strangers and selectively friendly with other dogs.
Care: Shar Peis like both home life, as well as easy access to nature. They are always ready for walks and games. It would be best to start socialising at a young age. Their coat doesn’t need special care, as a thorough brushing once a week is sufficient to remove dead hair and dirt. Particular care is required with Shar Peis wrinkles. They need to be cleaned regularly, in order to avoid skin irritations. You should also pay great attention to their eyes, as they are very sensitive.
The breed was used for dog fighting, with good results, due to its particular skin and its muscle strength. The breed’s exact origin is unknown. The only certainty is that it originates from the East. Statues that look a lot like the Shar Pei have been dated to the Han Dynasty in China and some traces of origins are also found in Tibet.
